Project Summary |
「うつほの杜学園」は世界、地域社会、自然界と繋がり、自分の力でグローカルに活躍できる人を育む、小・中一貫の新しい学びの場です。
和歌山県田辺市中辺路町の中川と富田川2つの川の合流地点に位置する、廃校（小学校）を対象地とし、本プロジェクトのランドスケープデザインでは「子どもが地域を育み、地域が子どもを育む学校」を目指して、これからの校庭という場のあり方を考えます。対象地を含め周辺の豊かな自然環境や先人が積み重さねた歴史や文化を大切にしながら、植物を通じた学びの庭を地域と連携してつくり、育てていきます。
現在は2025年4月の学校開校に向けた場づくりをワークショップ形式で行っています。
2024年3月には、うつほの杜の学校づくりに共感し和歌山県内外から集まった「学校おこし協力隊」の皆さんや、熊野の森を自然林に戻す活動をされている地域のNPO法人「熊野の杜ネットワークいちがしの会」の皆さんと協働し、校庭の木の間伐を行いました。また、間伐の際にでた枝葉で校庭にバイオネストとヤードヘッジを作りました。
今後もオンラインミーティングと現地でのワークショップを通して、うつほの杜学園の校庭をみんなで考え、つくっていきます。
UTSUHO ACADEMY is a new integrated elementary and middle school that fosters individuals capable of thriving on a “glocal” scale through their own efforts, while connecting with the world, the local community, and the natural world.
Located at the confluence of the Nakagawa and Tomitagawa Rivers in Nakabeji-cho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, this project utilizes the site of a former elementary school. The landscape design aims to create “a school where children nurture the community and the community nurtures the children,” reimagining the role of the schoolyard for the future. While cherishing the rich natural environment of the site and its surroundings, as well as the history and culture accumulated by previous generations, we will collaborate with the local community to create and nurture a “garden of learning” centered on plants.
We are currently conducting workshops to prepare the site for the school’s opening in April 2025.
In March 2024, we collaborated with members of the “School Revitalization Support Team”—who gathered from within and outside Wakayama Prefecture because they shared our vision for Utsuhono-no-Mori—as well as members of the local NPO “Kumano-no-Mori Network Ichigashi-no-Kai,” which is working to restore the Kumano Forest to its natural state, to thin the trees on the school grounds. We also used the branches and leaves from the thinning process to build bio-nests and yard hedges on the grounds.
Moving forward, we will continue to collaborate through online meetings and on-site workshops to collectively plan and shape the schoolyard at UTSUHO ACADEMY.
