Project Summary |
クライアントであるアミューズは、現在、豊島で立体農業の継承や6次産業化、その体験ツアーなどの事業を展開しています。今回のプロジェクトでは、島を訪れる観光客を迎えるホテルであるとともに、将来的には社員寮としても活用できる施設を計画しました。
建築設計はツバメアーキテクツ、フォルクはランドスケープデザインを担当しています。庭の施工は円直にお願いさせていただきました。
現地調査で島を訪れていたある日、宿泊先の民泊で、宿主さんと近所の方が玄関先で草花を分け合う光景に出会いました。この何気ない場面をきっかけに、花屋も植木屋もない豊島だからこそ、植物を愛する島の人たちとのつながりを通して庭をつくろうと考えました。その後、集会所の輪投げ会へ通いながら知り合った島民の皆さんのお庭を訪ね、植物を分けてもらい、ホテルの庭へ移植しました。
舗装やベンチには、島内の石材店が空き家や空き庭の解体時に保管していた豊島石を活用し、水田だった敷地の水はけを改善するため、竹林の竹を分けてもらい、竹暗渠を施工しました。また、豊島の暮らしを象徴する存在である井戸も庭に取り入れたいと考え、DIYによる打ち込み式井戸も施工しました。
こうして豊島の皆さんから分けていただいた植物や石、竹などをできる限り生かしながら、豊島ならではの庭をつくることができました。この庭が地域の皆さんとともに少しずつ育ち、ホテルを訪れる人と島の暮らしをゆるやかにつないでいく場所になればと願っています。
フォルクは今後も庭のお手入れに伴走させていただく予定です。
Our client, Amuse Inc., has been developing projects on Teshima that support the continuation of local terraced farming, promote value-added agricultural industries, and offer tours that introduce visitors to the island's agricultural culture. This project includes a hotel for visitors to the island that can also serve as employee housing in the future. The building was designed by Tsubame Architects, and FOLK was responsible for the landscape design.
During one of our early site visits, we stayed at a local guesthouse where we witnessed a simple yet memorable scene: our host and a neighbor were sharing flowers and garden plants at the front door. That everyday exchange inspired the direction of the project. On Teshima, there are neither flower shops nor garden centers, and many residents have long cultivated and shared plants with one another. We wanted the garden to grow out of those relationships.
Over the following months, we regularly visited the community hall, where local residents gathered for social events, gradually getting to know people across the island. We were invited into their gardens, where they generously shared plants that were then carefully transplanted into the hotel's landscape.
The garden was also built using materials sourced from within the island wherever possible. Stone paving and benches were made from Teshima stone that had been salvaged and stored by a local stonemason during the demolition of vacant houses and abandoned gardens. To improve drainage on the former rice field site, we constructed traditional bamboo underdrains using bamboo provided by local residents. We also wanted to incorporate a well—an enduring symbol of everyday life on Teshima—so we built a hand-driven well as part of the garden.
By weaving together plants, stone, bamboo, and other materials generously shared by the people of Teshima, we were able to create a garden that could only exist on this island.
