Project Summary |
Since 2023, a traditional house renovation workshop has been held in Kofu, Hino District, Tottori Prefecture, led by architect Ryo Abe. Since 2024, FOLK has been responsible for the garden-making workshops. The workshops bring together local residents, elementary school students, architecture students, and people of different generations to create a garden that fosters future local culture while making use of the diverse resources found within the surrounding community.
In 2024, three workshops were held. These included the creation of “Hito no Michi / Ame no Michi” — paths for people and rain — designed to make it easier to walk around the traditional house while allowing rainwater falling on the house to infiltrate naturally into the ground. A “viewing deck” was also built within the grove, creating a place for people to gather among the trees. In addition, a discussion was held to exchange ideas about the future of the garden.
Through this ongoing initiative, FOLK will continue to explore the possibilities of gardens surrounding traditional houses and to develop the garden together with diverse participants from both within and beyond the local community.
